Historians tell us that Roman soldiers lived in two types of military camps, permanent camps and marching camps.
Marching camps were used when soldiers were away on campaigns – usually conquering other countries to add land to the Roman Empire and had fewer home comforts. Soldiers lived in tents made out of leather – see Roman Tents.
Eventually the Romans decided it was easier to build all their camps to the same design so that when soldiers arrived in a new location they immediately knew where to pitch (put up) their tents. The camps were laid out like a town with streets, temples and a market place.
