When Jesus was about 12 years old, he went to Jerusalem with his parents, Mary and Joseph, to celebrate the Passover. The Passover remembers the time when the Israelites were saved from slavery by Moses (and God) and left Egypt after many years of being ruled by Pharaoh, the name given to the kings of Egypt. You can read the story in Exodus chapter 3; 4:1-12; chapter 5; 7:14-25; chapters 8-14 and watch it in episode 11, Exodus.
When he was in Jerusalem, Jesus went missing and his parents were very worried. Imagine their surprise when they found him in the Temple listening to the teachers and asking them questions! You can see that story in episode 14, One of Us and read the story here or in Luke 2:41-52.

Many years before Jesus was born, King David became king of all Israel. He was living in Hebron but he wanted to capture Jerusalem from the Jebusites and reign as king from Jerusalem. He surprised the Jebusites by getting into the city through a water tunnel and won the battle. There is more information about the tunnel here.
Peter, one of Jesus’ disciples, was in Jerusalem one day and went to the temple with John, another disciple, to pray. They saw a lame man being carried to one of the temple gates so that he could beg for money. Peter and John didn’t have any money but they said something amazing to him. They told him to get up and walk – and he did! The man praised God for what had happened to him. You can read the story in Acts 3:1-16 and see it in episode 8, The One that Got Away.
Jesus spent the last few days of his life in Jerusalem. He rode into Jerusalem on a donkey and was greeted by people who cheered him and threw palm leaves on the ground in front of him. You can read the story here (Mark 11:1-11) and watch it in episode 35, Spies and Lies.
Before he died, Jesus spent time with his disciples in Jerusalem. When they arrived in the room, dusty from their journey, Jesus surprised the discples by washing their feet - they felt it was beneath him - but Jesus understood about serving others and being humble. You can read the story here. They also had a final meal together when Jesus shared bread and wine with them. This meal is called the Last Supper and you can see both these stories in episode 37, Betrayal and read about the Last Supper here.
Later Jesus was arrested in the Garden of Gethsemane, just outside Jerusalem, and taken away to stand trial before Pilate, the Roman Governor. Although Pilate didn’t think Jesus had done anything wrong, people turned against Jesus and demanded that Pilate hand him over the Roman authorities to be crucified – and he did.
